Renfrewshire was a former county in western Scotland with an area of 245 sq. miles (634km2). Its northern boundary is the River Clyde which expands into the Firth of Clyde and turns southward, providing Renfrewshire with another boundary. The landward boundaries are Ayrshire and Lanarkshire with the City of Glasgow completing the circle. The county town was Renfrew, but there were several other settlements of considerable size: Bishopton, Bridge of Weir, Eaglesham, Giffnock, Gourock, Greenock, Houston, Johnstone, Kilmacolm, Paisley, Neilston, Newton Mearns and Port Glasgow. The principal rivers were the Black Cart, White Cart and Gryfe.

In 1974 the county was incorporated into Strathclyde Region where it was divided into the Districts of Inverclyde, Renfrew and Eastwood. In the 1996 reorganization (when the administrative regions were abolished across Scotland) the three districts became the Council Areas of Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire respectively.
