Perlethorpe cum Budby was formed from the parishes of Perlethorpe and Budby in 1899. Both parishes were townships in the ecclesiastical parish of Edwinstone before becoming civil parishes in 1866. The two parishes were also in the Southwell Registration District as was Perlethorpe cum Budby until 1974.

According to the 2001 census the parish had a population in 2001 of 198, reducing to 183 at the 2011 UK census.

Perlethorpe

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Perlethorope from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"PERLETHORPE, a township-chapelry in Edwinstowe parish, Notts; on the river Meden, 2½ miles N by W of Ollerton, and 6¾ S S E of Worksop r. station. It contains the hamlet of Thoresby; and its post town is Ollerton, under Newark. Real property: £970. Population: 98. Houses: 19. The manor belonged to Roger de Buisli: passed to the Pierreponts; and, with Thoresby Hall, belongs now to Earl Manvers. The Hall is a splendid mansion; and stands in a well-wooded park about 10 miles in circuit. The living is a [perpetual] curacy in the diocese of Lincoln. Value: £100. Patron: Earl Manvers. The church stands in Thoresby Park.

"BUDBY, a township in Edwinstowe parish, Notts; 2½ miles NW by W of Ollerton. Population: 113. Houses: 27."
