The civil parish of St. Giles and St. John was formed in 1926 from the individual parishes of Oxford St. Giles and Oxford St. John the Baptist. These parishes did not become part of Oxford civil parish which was formed the same year. In 1929 the parish was enlarged by three parishes which were abolished and parts of three other parishes. All these parishes were outside the city centre. In 1933 the parish of St. Giles and St. John itself was abolished and the entire area was absorbed into Oxford Civil Parish.
