A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Ouston from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "OUSTON, a township in Stamfordham parish, Northumberland; near the river Pont, 9½ miles E N E of Hexham. Acres: 511. Population: 23. Houses: 4."
Ouston was a township in the ancient parish of Stamfordham and became a separate civil parish in 1866. In 1955 the civil parish was abolished and the area was absorbed back into the parish of Stamfordham.
