Today a significant part of the town is a historic district list on the National Register of Historic Places. [edit] BriefFrom: Womans Club of Odessa extracted 2 January 2012, Fair Use. First settled by the Dutch in the 17th century, present day [after 1855] Odessa was originally called Appoquinimink, after the creek on which it lies. British settlers gradually replaced the Dutch, and in 1664 the Appoquinimink area was confiscated and deeded to a Captain Edmund Cantwell. In 1731, his enterprising son, Richard Cantwell, built a toll bridge over the creek. The adjoining village gradually became known as Cantwell's Bridge. [edit] Research TipsThe village of Appoquinimink took its name from Appoquinimaink Creek (note spelling difference---USGS maps give the Creek name as (Appoquinimaink") on which it lies.
