NOTE: There are two Newtowns in Northumberland. They have been renamed to indicate their location. This is Rothbury (near Wooler) which is further north than Newtown (near Rothbury).

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Newtown (near Wooler) from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"NEWTOWN, a township in Chillingham parish, Northumberland; 3½ miles E S E of Wooler. Population: 104. Houses: 17. The curious old pillar, called Hurlstone, is here.

Newtown was originally a township in the ancient parish of Chillingham, Northumberland. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 until 1974 the parish was part of Glendale Rural District. In 1955 it was abolished and absorbed into the newly created parish of Lilburn.
