A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Newbiggin in Shotley from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "NEWBIGGIN, a township in Shotley [High Quarter] parish, Northumberland; on the river Derwent at the boundary with Durham, 9½ miles S by E of Hexham. Acres: 2,056. Population: 69. Houses: 10. The property belongs to the Rev. D. Capper."
Newbiggin in Shotley was originally a township in the ancient parish of Shotley High Quarter (later known as Blanchland. It became a separate civil parish in 1866, but in 1887 it was absorbed into Blanchland.
