Neu Osterwick was founded in 1812 as a Mennonite village within the Chortitza Colony. The village was originally settled by German-speaking Mennonite immigrants from Prussia. 1814 census records (in German) can be found in Die Niederländisch-Niederdeutschen Hintergründe der Mennonitischen Ostwanderungen, by B. H. Unruh, pp.283-84.
