A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Marishes from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"MARISHES, a township in Pickering parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; on the river Derwent, 4¼ miles S of Pickering. Acres: 2,289. Real property: £2,406. Population: 287. Houses: 50."

There are three hamlets making up the civil parish of Marishes: East Marishes, West Marishes and High Marishes. East Marish was linked ecclesiastically to Thornton Dale, while West Marishes and High Marishes were linked to Pickering. (Source: GENUKI)

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Marishes was located in Pickering Rural District. Historically, it was in the Pickering Lythe Wapentake and the Pickering Registration District. The area is now part of the Ryedale District of North Yorkshire, England.
