NOTE: The only entry for Little Smeaton in Wikipedia is that for Little Smeaton (near Pontefract) which is now in Selby District but was formerly in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Wikipedia does not have an entry for the following hamlet.


A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Little Smeaton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SMEATON (Little), a township in Birkby parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 6 miles N of Northallerton. Real property: £1,127. Population: 82. Houses: 14."

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Little Smeaton was located in Northallerton Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ancient parish of Birkby (near Northallerton) in the Allerton Wapentake. It was in the Northallerton Registration District.
