In 1900, Lichtenberg was a village in Brandenburg (province), Preußen, Germany.

In 1920, Lichtenberg village was incorporated as the 17th borough in the independent city of Berlin in Brandenburg (province), Preußen, Germany.

In 1946, the city of Berlin was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. Lichtenberg borough was located in East Berlin.

In the 1970s, Lichtenberg borough lost some territory to the new borough of Marzahn.
