Lanchester Rural District was formed in 1894 and was abolished in 1974. It was located in the northern part of County Durham, England with the town of Lanchester at its centre, and was bounded by Consett, Stanley and other urban districts to the north, Chester le Street Rural District to the east, Durham Rural District to the southeast, Weardale Rural District to the southwest, and the county of Northumberland to the northeast. In 1974 Lancester Rural District was replaced by the non-metropolitan Derwentside District until 2009 when Durham became a unitary authority.
