LaFayette is a city in Chambers County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Chambers County, Alabama and is located 47 miles (76 km) northwest of Columbus, Georgia.

1899 Fire

A destructive fire raged the morning of 31 Jan 1899 in the business portion of Lafayette. The business portion of the town would have been wiped out had it not been for a heavy rain. The flames originated in Germany's store and spread rapidly. Following is the list of the losers: Germany & Co., dry goods, total loss, insurance $3,500; Lafayette Sun, total loss, insurance $500; J. M. Griffin, groceries, total loss, insurance $1,000; Belcher & Allen's saloons were also damaged. The total loss amounted to $25,000 with insurance of $12,000[1]. [1].
