Kukkus was founded on 26 June 1767 as a Lutheran colony populated by settlers from Germany. Between 1764 and 1772, 106 colonies were established along the Volga River near Saratov, Russia. Colonists were assigned to settlements according to their religious confession. Kukkus existed as a ethnic German settlement until 1941 when all ethnic German inhabitants were either deported, incarcerated, executed or relocated due to anti-German sentiment on the part of the Russians.
