The burial ground of St Cuthbert is approached by a short driveway off the steep back road (B727) from the town of Kikrcudbright to Gelston. It is fronted by an elaborate portico. The cemetery is quite large, well kept and much visited.

Research Tips

Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Memorial Inscriptions pre-1855, vol 4, chap 18, by Alison Mitchell, (published 1993 by the Scottish Genealogy Society, Edinburgh, Scotland) provides a condensed transcription of every stone which includes someone born before 1855. The transcription includes 628 stones. Another survey covering stones up to 1918 counted 1136.
