Houghton le Side is a very small village and civil parish in the borough of Darlington and the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles to the southwest of Newton Aycliffe. The population at the 2011 UK census was less than 100. Details are now maintained within the parish of Walworth.

Houghton le Side was originally a township in the ancient parish of Gainford in County Durham. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 it was part of Darlington Rural District. Since 1974 it has been part of the Borough of Darlington (a unitary authority).

A nineteenth century description

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Houghton le Side from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"HOUGHTON-LE-SIDE, a township in Gainford parish, Durham; on Whinstone dyke, 6 miles NW of Darlington. Acres: 1,060. Real property: £1,223; of which £64 are in quarries. Population: 133. Houses: 28. The township is a meet for the Raby hounds; and it has a national school."
