NOTE: As well as Hepburn there is also a much more urban place named Hebburn (near Morpeth) which is close to Newcastle upon Tyne.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Hepburn from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"HEBBURN, or HEPBURN, a township in Chillingham parish, Northumberland; 5 miles SE of Wooler. Population: 77. Houses: 19. Hebburn Wood is a maze of birches, ferns, and rock; Hebburn Crags are crowned with an ancient camp; and Hebburn Tower, within a gate of Chillingham Park, is a good old peel, with a fine pointed window. Limestone is quarried."

Hepburn was originally a township in the ancient parish of Chillingham, Northumberland. It became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 until 1955 the parish was part of Glendale Rural District. In 1955 it was abolished and absorbed back into Chillingham.
