Llanllyfni is a small village and a community (or parish) since 1974 in Gwynedd, Wales. It is located south of the town of Caernarfon. As a community the 2011 UK census recorded a population of 4,135. It is a largely Welsh speaking village; 85% of the villagers speak Welsh as their first language. The community consists of the villages of Drws-y-coed, Nantlle, Nasareth, Nebo, Penygroes, Talysarn and the village of Llanllyfni itself. Nasereth gives its name to the ward in modern Gwynedd. The river Afon Llyfni (sometimes spelt Afon Llyfnwy), runs through the village. Llanllyfni existed before the slate quarries opened but grew bigger and bigger during the slate quarrying period. In the 2001 UK census, there were about 650 people living in the village of Llanllyfni. Llanllyfni is seven miles south-ish from the town of Caernarfon. Slate tiles (shaped from the natural material) were a very popular roofing material for housing up until 1950. For the most part, they have been replaced by clay tiles or concrete tiles, but slate is still used. [edit] Research Tips
