A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Heaton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "HEATON, a township in Leek parish, Stafford[shire]; on the river Dane, at the boundary with Cheshire, 4¼ miles NW of Leek. Real property: £3,142. Population: 396. Houses: 79. The inhabitants are employed chiefly in spinning cotton and forming grindstones."
