There were significant changes to the coverage of this registration district since it was first formed.

In 1901 the boundary between Hackney and Bethnal Green was redrawn and the parish of South Hornsey was added to Hackney Metropolitan Borough.
In 1930 Stoke Newington took over its own registration district.
In 1965 Stoke Newington became part of the new London Borough of Hackney and again joined the Hackney Registration District.
