Gunthwaite and Ingbirchworth were separate civil parishes in a joint urban district from 1894 until 1938. Prior to 1894 the two parishes had made up a Rural Sanitary District. In 1938 the urban district was abolished and the two parishes were joined as one civil parish within Penistone Rural District. Since 1974 Gunthwaite and Ingbirchworth is a civil parish in Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England with a population of 400 according to the 2001 UK census.

Ingbirchworth is situated 9-1/2 miles from the centre of Barnsley. Close by, is what most residents or previous residents call Scout Dyke (a reference to its being a World War II base for US troops), now Kingswood Peak Venture, opposite Scout Dyke Reservoir. This is situated between Penistone and Ingbirchworth. Ingbirchworth has its own Methodist Church.

There is no mention of Gunthwaite in Wikipedia. GENUKI quotes from an early 19th century gazetteer:

"GUNTHWAITE, a township, in the parish of Penistone, wapentake of Staincliffe; 2 miles NW. of Penistone, 7 from Barnsley, 11 from Huddersfield. Pop. 86."

From the same gazetteer GENUKI states that Ingbirchworth had a population of 367.
