In 1543, Grunewald was the name of a hunting lodge in Berlin. In 1900, Grunewald was a neighborhood in Brandenburg (province), Preußen, Germany. In 1920, Grunewald was incorporated as a district into the borough of Wilmersdorf in the independent city of Berlin in Brandenburg (province), Preußen, Germany. In 1946, the city of Berlin was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. Grunewald district was located in Wilmersdorf borough in East Berlin. In 1990, the city of Berlin was reunited. In 2001, the borough of Wilmersdorf was combined with the borough of Charlottenburg to create a new borough called Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf with Grunewald as one of its neighborhoods.
