A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Great Plumstead from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"PLUMSTEAD (Great), a village and a parish in Blofield [registration] district, Norfolk. The village stands 2 miles N W of Brundall [railway] station, and 4½ E by N of Norwich; and has a post-office under Norwich. The parish comprises 1,403 acres. Real property: £2,903. Population: 342. Houses: 72. The property is divided among a few. The living is a [perpetual] curacy in the diocese of Norwich. Value: £70. Patrons: the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. The church is plain, and partly of brick. Charities, £22."

In 1935 Great Plumstead and Little Plumstead and the village of Thorpe End (part of Little Plumstead parish) merged into the one civil parish of Great and Little Plumstead.
