Great Fransham is a village in Norfolk, England, roughly about an equal distance between Swaffham and Dereham. There is also a Little Fransham; the two villages merged to form the civil parish of Fransham in 1935. They were once served by Fransham railway station.

Wikipedia has sub-articles on All Saints Church, Great Fransham Mill and the village's railway connection, as well as other articles on two men of the parish: William Crane and Sir Vincent Raven.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Great Fransham from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1871-72:

"FRANSHAM, or Frensham, or Great Fransham, a parish in Mitford [registration] district, Norfolk; on the East Anglian railway, 6¼ miles NE by E of Swaffham. It has a station of the name of Fransham, on the railway, and a post office, of the name of Great Fransham, under Thetford. Acres: 1,901. Real property: £3, 619. Population: 295. Houses: 66. The property is much subdivided. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value: £504. Patron: Magdalene College, Cambridge. The church is ancient, and has several brasses. There is a fuel allotment, worth £14 a year."

Research Tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
