From the Gazetteer for Scotland:

"An industrial hamlet of North Ayrshire, Glengarnock lies to the southwest of Kilbirnie Loch, a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Kilbirnie and 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Beith. Textile mills developed in the late 18th century, to be followed by coal-mines and most notably the Glengarnock Iron Works, which opened in 1843 using the local coal and ironstone in its blast-furnaces. The village grew rapidly as a result. By the early 20th century the Glengarnock Iron and Steel Company employed thousands however, by 1978, the industry was in terminal decline and was gone completely by 1985, bringing unemployment and economic collapse. New light industries have been established and few traces remain of the old industrial complex.
"Glengarnock has a primary school and a station on the railway line from Glasgow and Paisley to Kilwinning Junction. The ruined 15th-century Glengarnock Castle lies 2 miles (3 km) north of Kilbirnie."
