The territory was in the realm of the Mohawk tribe. The town was first settled around 1715 after being purchased directly from local natives. Part of the early town was called Vroomansland after Adam Vrooman, the landowner. However, other settlers of German extraction, desiring the same land, fomented trouble with the natives. Fulton was established from part of the Town of Middleburgh in 1828. The Shafer Site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [edit] Research Tips
