A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Fawdon and Clinch from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"FAWDON, CLINCH, and HARTSIDE, a township in Ingram parish, Northumberland; near the river Breamish, 9¾ miles S of Wooler. Acres: 2,082. Population: 62. Houses: 12."

Fawdon and Clinch was one of the numerous groups of townships within the ancient parish of Ingram. Hartside was another of the townships that grouped with Fawdon and Clinch during the 19th century. Hartside was transferred from Fawdon and Clinch to the parish of Ingram Linhope Greenshawhill and Hartside in 1888. Fawdon and Clinch was part of Glendale Rural District from 1894 until 1955 when it was absorbed back into the civil parish of Ingram.
