From The Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Monumental Inscriptions pre-1855, volume 3, edited by Alison Mitchell and published by the Scottish Genealogy Society, 1993.

"There was a medieval parish church, dedicated to St. Glastian, by the side of the Abbey burn and close to the Cistercian Abbey of Dundrennan which had been founded about 1142. This served the parish of Rerwick [Rerrick] until it was abandoned about 1605, but before this date the parish services seem to have moved into the empty Abbey building. While the church was within the Abbey ruins both church and abbey were often spoken of as the Monktoun.
"Several medieval gravestones remain within the abbey ruin. The small burial ground to the east and in the shade of the chancel was closed to interments in 1952 and can be visited free of charge (although there is an entrance fee to the Abbey ruin in care of Historic Scotland)."
