Dumfries (possibly from Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Phris) is a market town and former royal burgh in southwest Scotland, near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth. Dumfries was the county town of the former county of Dumfriesshire. The town is nicknamed "Queen of the South" and the nickname is carried by their soccer team. People from Dumfries are known colloquially as "Doonhamers". The town is now located within the Dumfries and Galloway Council Area of Scotland.

The population was more than 30,000 in 2001, the last census available.
