A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Cotcliffe from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"COTCLIFF, an extra-parochial tract in Northallerton district, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 5½ miles N of Thirsk. Population: 13. Houses: 2."

Cotcliffe is currently in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, it was located in Northallerton Rural District. Historically, it was in the Allertonshire Wapentake.
