The City of Newcastle upon Tyne, commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in Tyne and Wear in the northeast of England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the northeast of England and forms the core of Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom.

Before the creation of the county of Tyne and Wear in 1974, Newcastle upon Tyne was in the county of Northumberland. A longer article deals with its history in that county up until 1974.

The City of Newcastle upon Tyne covers a wider area than did the County Borough of Newcastle in the period before 1974.
