Chertsey Rural District was formed in 1894, under the Local Government Act of that year, as a local government tier for six civil parishes in northwest Surrey. In 1933 when Surrey put through amendments to its rural and urban district structure, Chertsey Rural District was abolished and all but two of the parishes came under the sway of a local urban district. These parishes eventually became part of the urban district's main town.
