From Scottish Places:

Carriden lies 1¼ miles (2 km) east of Bo'ness. The Antonine Wall meets the Firth of Forth here. A mediaeval village lay close to the 17th-century Carriden House, and the remains of the old parish church and its kirkyard can still be seen. A replacement was constructed a half-mile (0.8 km) to the northwest in 1766, but by 1909 this was considered too small and a new church was built adjacent.
Carriden House was the home of Admiral Sir George Hope (1767 - 1818) and his son, Admiral Sir James Hope (1808-81). Carriden was the birthplace of Colonel James Gardiner (1687 - 1745) who was killed fighting the Jacobites at Prestonpans. Little Carriden is a cottage-style public housing estate which forms part of the settlement of Muirhouses to the south.
