Between 1811 and 1851 the census parish tables list Cardiff St. John and St. Mary as a single parish, comprising the whole of the town. In both 1801 and all censuses 1861-1901 the two parishes are listed separately. (Source: A Vision of Britain through Time) Cardiff St. John and Cardiff St. Mary were the ancient ecclesiastical parishes from which the city of Cardiff was formed. As is stated above, sometimes they were considered as one parish, Cardiff St. John and St. Mary, sometimes as two, but the is no date of merger. Both existed before 1832. GENUKI lists a great many more churches of all denominations in Cardiff that were established during the 19th century. A Vision of Britain through Time notes three settlements within Cardiff that were part of the joint eccleiastical parish: Caerau, Llanfenechi, and Merthyr Onfryd. [edit] Research Tips
