Cainscross was created as a civil parish in 1894 out of the eastern part of the parish of Stonehouse and the western part of the parish of Stroud. It was abolished in 1936 and split between the parishes of Stroud and King's Stanley. On being establised as a civil parish it became an integral part of the Stroud Rural District.

Prior to 1894 Cainscross had existed ecclesiastically as a chapelry within the parishes of Stonehouse, Stroud, and Randwick. The change in status followed an increase of population in this area to the north of Bristol. The alteration in 1936 was in response to the the greater urbanization of the towns of Stroud and Stonehouse.
