Brompton is a village and civil parish which since 1974 has been in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England, about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) north of the county town of Northallerton. Practically a suburb of the nearby county town, the village was near the site of a battle between English and Scots armies (Battle of the Standard, 1138) and was the location of mills producing linen goods from the 18th century onward. The village is now largely residential with just a few small businesses. The UK censuses of 2001 and 2011 show populations of 1,912 and 2,055 respectively. Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Brompton was located in Northallerton Rural District. Historically, it was a chapelry in the ancient parish of Northallerton in the Allerton Wapentake. For more information, see the EN Wikipedia article Brompton, Hambleton.
