The Hundreds of Gloucestershire, as with hundreds in other English counties, were the original geographic divisions of the county for administrative, military and judicial purposes. Each hundred covered a number of parishes. The introduction of civil registration in 1837 was accompanied by the creation of other groups of parishes such as Sanitary Districts and Poor Law Unions.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Berkeley Hundred from John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles of 1887:

"Berkeley.-- hundred, W. Gloucestershire, 67,539 acres, population 27,498; contains 22 parishes and parts of 3 others."

Berkeley Hundred is located on the southeast bank of the Severn Estuary and includes Berkeley Castle where King Edward II was murdered in 1327.

The list of parishes below (taken from A Vision of Britain through Time) numbers 33 and probably dates from the early part of the 19th century before some parishes were merged.
