"A western suburb of the settlement of Dunbar in East Lothian, Belhaven sits at the eastern end of Belhaven Bay. The Belhaven Brewery is located nearby. Belhaven House is a five-bay mansion dating from c.1825, which was home to noted botanist Sir George Taylor (1904-93)."

Belhaven's population of less than 500 in 1881 is the reason for describing the settlement as a hamlet.
