Beaumont Leys is now located within the city boundary of Leicester, although prior to the 2011 UK census, the Office for National Statistics considered Beaumont Leys as an "environ", distinct from the city. Beaumont Leys is bordered by the wards of Abbey to the east, Fosse to the southeast and New Parks to the south. North and west of the area are the Leicestershire villages of Anstey and Glenfield. It is now an electoral ward of Leicester with a population at the 2011 UK census of 16,480. The area was largely developed from the 1970s onwards.

As a contrast, A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Beaumont Leys from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"BEAUMONT-LEYS, an extra-parochial tract in Barrow-upon-Soar [registration] district, Leicestershire; near the Leicester and Swannington railway, 2 miles N of Leicester. Acres: 1,210. Real property: £1,955. Population: 31." Houses: 6."

In 1935 Beaumont Leys was abolished and mostly absorbed by the city of Leicester with small sections going to Anstey and Thurcaston parishes.
