From Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Memorial Inscriptions pre-1855, vol 1, by Alison Mitchell, published 1990 by the Scottish Genealogy Society, Edinburgh, Scotland:

"This large farmland parish already existed in 1174. The medieval church was dedicated to St Andrew and was, at one time, known as Kirkandrews Balmaghie. The present building on the adjacent site was set up in 1794 and renovated in 1894. It stands on a prominent site, visible for miles, surrounded by a spacious crowded burial ground which is still in use.
"The only large group of houses in the parish is Laurieston, know as Clauchanpluck until renamed by the 18th century landowner, Walter Sloan Laurie of Redcastle. Hensol was called Duchrae and Woodhall loch was Loch Grenoch.
