Altwiller is a French commune located in the Bas-Rhin department and the Alsace. The population in 1999 was 746 inhabitants.

History

Fragments of vases and other Gallo-Roman artifacts have been found in Bonnefontaine. The site is located on the salt road. Altwiller was deserted in the 15th century and rebuilt next to the old location in 1559 by Huguenots, mainly from Lorraine. After partial destruction by the Croats in 1635, it became the property of the Sarrewerden family then of the Nassau family. It was recovered by France in 1793.
