Abdick and Bulstone Hundred is located in the southern part of the county of Somerset, England. The original Abdick Hundred was surrounded by detached parts of Bulstone Hundred. At some stage over the centuries it was decided to merge the two hundreds into one. The merged hundred was bounded on the north by North Curry Hundred, part of Somerton Hundred, and Pitney Hundred; on the east by North Petherton Hundred and part of Kingsbury Hundred; on the south by part of South Petherton Hundred and another part of Kingsbury Hundred; and on the west by Taunton and Taunton Dean Hundred. It contained 26 parishes and covered an area of 38,575 acres (60.27 sq mi or 15,611 hectares).

The map included is based on one of a series of maps in Wikimedia Commons. These maps are in the public domain and originally drawn by "Hogweard". A map of the hundreds of Somerset dated 1832 provided by A Vision of Britain through Time gives the locations of all the hundreds in one map. It will expand for visibility, but it unfortunately cannot be copied to WeRelate.

Research Tips

  • The Somerset Heritage Centre (incorporating what was formerly the Somerset Record Office and the Somerset Local Studies Library) can be found at its new location at Langford Mead in Taunton. It has an online search facility leading to pages of interest, including maps from the First and Second Ordnance Survey (select "Maps and Postcards" from the list at the left, then enter the parish in the search box).
The Heritage Centre has an email address: archives@somerset.gov.uk.
  • Three maps on the A Vision of Britain through Time website illustrate the changes in political boundaries over the period 1830-1945. All have expanding scales and on the second and third this facility is sufficient that individual parishes can be inspected.
  • Somerset Hundreds as drawn in 1832. This map was prepared before The Great Reform Act of that year. Note the polling places and representation of the various parts of the county.
