Brief History

Abb's Valley is named after Absalom Looney of Looney's Creek in Augusta county, Virginia, who came upon the fertile area surrounding the Bluestone branch of New River in abt 1770 and was so impressed that he returned home and enticed his kinsmen and neighbors to acquire land and settle there. Two of the first settlers to the area were Capt. James Moore and his brother-in-law, Robert Poague.

Abb's Valley is famous due to the Shawnee massacre and enslavement of Capt. Moore's family that occurred on 14 Jul 1786. (see person pages for more information)
