A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Abbots Barton from John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles of 1887:

"Abbots Barton, seat, near Winchester, Hants."

Abbots Barton was created as a civil parish in 1894 from Winchester St. Bartholomew Hyde, a large parish to the north of the Winchester Muncipal Borough. The new parish was part of the Winchester Rural District. Although it was reduced in size in 1900 and again in 1932, it continued to be a civil parish right up until 1974 when the whole area became part of the non-metropolitan district of the City of Winchester.
