Birthplace revised [18 February 2014]

I discovered recently that Wheatley, Yorkshire could refer to one of two fairly small places--one now in Halifax, West Yorkshire; the other in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

In order to figure out which of the two Wheatleys was Willie's real birthplace I went back to the census original. I don't have an Ancestry worldwide sub so I used a British source named The Genealogist which also provides census originals. Looking at the image I found the birthplace was Whitby, not Wheatley. This makes sense because Whitby is not far from Filey where his sister was born, and it is the size of place where there might be an innkeeper (his father was an innkeeper).

I also noted the existence in the household of his maternal grandmother, Eliza Standland. I must admit I am not 100% confident of her surname.

I am not related to your family--just an amateur genealogist with a keeness for geography.
