Is this the same William Shores? [4 February 2013]
According to the 1850 US Federal Census for Nettle Creek, Randolph, Indiana, I found the following family:
John Shore, age 40, born in North Carolina
Jenetha, age 37, born in North Carolina
William, age 13, born in Indiana
Ransome, age 11, born in Indiana
Nancy J, age 7, born in Indiana
MaryAnn, age 5, born in Indiana
Joseph, age 9, born in Indiana
Sydna, age 2, born in Indiana
Martha, age 6 mo, born in Indiana
Nettle Creek Township, Old Losantville, is located in Randolph County on the east border of Indiana. Since we show that William was born 17 Dec 1837 in Losantville, Randolph, Indiana, I am fairly certain that this is the same William Shores.
In the 1860 US Federal Census for Monroe, Kosciusko, Indiana, I found the following family:
William Shores, age 24, born in Indiana
Elizabeth, age 22, born in Indiana
John, age 2, born in Indiana
Erasmus, age 6 mo, born in Indiana
I also found what appears to be his brother living with the neighbor family Henry and Christina Auswanger:
Joseph Shores, age 18, born in Indiana
Monroe Township is located in Kosciusko County about 95 miles north by northwest of Nettle Creek. William and Elizabeth were living next to her father, Allen Sisk, and there were 3 other Sisk families listed on the same census page. I'm not sure how he met Elizabeth, so I can't figure out how he and Joseph ended up in Monroe.
In the 1870 US Federal Census for Monroe, Kosciusko, Indiana, I found the following family:
Allen E. Sisk, age 58, born in North Carolina (Elizabeth's father)
Mary E. Sisk, age 22, born in Indiana (Elizabeth's sister)
Elizabeth Shore, age 31, born in Indiana
John A, age 11, born in Indiana
Edmund A, age 9, born in Indiana
Mary J, age 6, born in Indiana
Miles W, age 4, born in Indiana
This is most likely William's wife and children living with her father, and William was not living with them. I have been unable to locate him in the 1870 census records using an index search.
In the 1880 US Federal Census for Dora, Otter Tail, Minnesota, I found:
William Shore, age 44, born in Indiana, parents also born in Indiana
William Shore, above, could be this William Shores, but further information is needed to know for sure.
In the 1900 US Federal Census for Pelican Twp, Otter Tail, Minnesota, I found:
William H. Shors, age 64 (Dec 1835), born in Indiana, parents born in North Carolina, married 19 years
Mary, age 45 (Aug 1854), born in England, parents also born in England, married 19 years
Wilbur, age 16 (Apr 1883), born in Minnesota
Mildred, age 14 (Apr 1885), born in Minnesota
Ransom, age 12 (Nov 1888), born in Minnesota
Lewis, age 11 (Mar 1889), born in Minnesota
Mahlon, age 2 (Oct 1899), born in Minnesota
This is likely to be the same William Shore from Dora.
However, I did find the following information:
Wm. H. Shores, "Minnesota, Deaths and Burials, 1835-1990"
Wm. H. Shores, male.
Death Date: 29 Jun 1903
Death Place: Pelican, Otter Tail, Minnesota
Age: 67
Birth Date: 1836
Father: John
Mother: Mary
indexing project (batch) number: B02070-8
system origin: Minnesota-EASy
source film number: 2117540
If the parents names are correct on this death record, then William Shores from Nettle Creek, married to Elizabeth Sisk, is most likely NOT William H. Shores, married to Mary (Wait) Ford. A marriage record for William and Mary, listing his parents, would prove or disprove that William Shores from Nettle Creek, Indiana is the same William Shore/Shors from Otter Tail County, Minnesota.
At this time, I am inclined to believe that they are two different individuals, who, somewhere along the way, got linked together as one individual. Until someone comes forward with other information proving a link, I am going to separate the information for them and go on the theory that William H. Shores from Dora/Pelican Townships is a relative of William Shores from Nettle Creek.
Discussion, further evidence would be appreciated.
