Parents of William of Crail [12 November 2012]

Various theories have been advanced as to William's parentage:

  • Naming pattern
  • Found records that might be the right ones given the dna evidence

being just two of them

This was recently (Oct 2012) solved in that the papers held in the Scottish Archives (Pay-outs to the widows and children of the Crail fishermen drowned on 21st January 1765, in National Archives of Scotland, GD/26/12/25) have been re-examined and the mysterious Richard was named as the grandfather of the orphaned children.

The question has now changed to Which Richard?--LornaHen 20:42, 11 November 2012 (EST)

Which Richard? [12 November 2012]

Currently favoured candidate is the Richard who married Jennet GOURLAY (tree, such that it is, needs to be loaded & linked here) at North Berwick in 1728.

Their son William was baptized 23 March 1729 in the Parish of Whitekirk & Tynninghame, East Lothian, which makes him marginally on the young side to have married Person:Catherine_Wishart_(2) in Dec 1748.

However, Richard himself is in the right place and time.--LornaHen 21:26, 11 November 2012 (EST)
