Birthplace of William and Elizabeth Allery [31 December 2019]

I am a member of WeRelate and often inspect other users' entries to see if I can sort out unknown placenames. These come up in red when they can't be found in our database.

William Allery's birthplace of Blackwater, Devon was one of those. Wikipedia did not include it, nor did my 21st century road atlas. From that I presumed that Blackwater was either too small a place to be noticed or an error in the census. Census enumerators were not tested for their hearing although they were expected to provide legible details. I checked the image in Ancestry where Blackwater is quite legible but Elizabeth Allery's birthplace was less obvious, but appeared to be East Allerton, Devon, which also came up red in our database. In the 1861 census listing for the family the placenames are somewhat different.

With the assistance of a list of Devon parishes found in GENUKI and also in FindMyPast, I discovered the existence of the parishes of BLACKAWTON and EAST ALLINGTON and then found them in my atlas 3-4 miles apart, inland from Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. Both these places were in our database. I then did a search of Devon marriages on FindMyPast and found William Allery married Elizabeth King in the Church of England parish of East Allington on 1 Jan 1818. This is in their recordset Devon Marriages and Banns in which transcriptions are copyrighted by the Devon Family History Society.

In the placename description of Blackawton the quote from Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales infers that East Allington was a neighbouring parish.

I hope that this bit of detective work has provided a bit more information about the family of William Allery for you.
