Too Many Sources [2 August 2009]

I removed some of the less useful sources. I sympathize with collecting all known sources, but many don't indicate what they contain, and turn out to be barely worth looking up. I wonder if there is a better way to document this type of stuff than cluttering up the person's page? At a minimum an abstract should be given so there is some indication of what one expects to find from the source and whether it is rich with information, or just a passing mention.

NEHGR vol. 7 [not 9 as posted] p. 9. Memoir of Benjamin Pierce. As an ancestor of the subject, a Thomas Pierce rates a single paragraph, but it is the father of this Thomas, not this Thomas. Freeman of Charlestown 1635, d. 7 Oct 1666.

NEHGR vol. 3, p. 244. List of freeman include "Tho. Pierce" of "Woob", dated 10 Oct 1677. Wouldn't Thomas have to be freeman to serve as selectman in 1660? So is this probably his son being made freeman rather than Thomas at age almost 70?

NEHGR 23:191, "Record-Book of the First Church of Charlestown": 1634. 12 : mo : day 21 Thomas Peerce ... Admitted. [21 Feb 1634/35]. Without the abstract I added here it is hard to tell if this source is useful, and since this fact is given by another source, it wasn't really. Also, I wonder, because the Cutter book (Western NY) uses this same date as admission of Thomas, but also of his father Thomas. So which is it?

NEHGR 25:150 [not 149 as posted], "Record-Book of the First Church of Charlestown": 1639. "4th:mo: day 17 Abigail Peirce the daughter of Thomas Peirce and of Elizabath his wife was Baptised." This should go on Abigail's page. While she is probably the daughter of this Thomas (otherwise a long gap between marriage in 1635 and John b. 1643), Cutter lists her in both this Thomas' family and the father Thomas' family.

NEHGR 37:423: Publication notice for Frederick Clifton Pierce's Pierce Genealogy. Being about Thomas' "Posterity" pertinent, but since quoted extensively in another source citation, perhaps not needed.

NEHGR 86:349: "During an examination of the court files of Middlesex County, Mass., from 1675 to 1695, the following facts were noted. Pierce, Thomas, Sr., of Woburn. His estate was settled in December 1683." The participating heirs would have been useful, but unfortunately not to be found, and the date by itself is less so since we already know when he died.

Watch out for conflicting Thomas Pierces [1 August 2009]

I removed record of burial in The Old Burial Ground, Charlestown, MA, supported by source Source:A century of town life, a history of Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1775-1887 : with surveys, records and twenty-eight pages of plans and views, p. 77: "Monuments in Old Burial Ground: Thomas Peirce, 1693".

According to Source:Pierce genealogy, being the record of the posterity of Thomas Pierce : an early inhabitant of Charlestown and afterwards Charlestown Village (Woburn), in New England,, p. 20, says that this is Thomas, the son of Samuel Pierce of Charlestown who died "Aug. 4, 1693, of fever".

Using the genealogical dictionary found in Source:Pierce genealogy, being the record of the posterity of Thomas Pierce : an early inhabitant of Charlestown and afterwards Charlestown Village (Woburn), in New England,, the father of the Thomas on this page, Thomas, Sr., had a wife named Elizabeth. This Thomas married Elizabeth Cole. And the Thomas who was son of Samuel Pierce m. Elizabeth Hall. So all three Thomases had wives named Elizabeth.
