Use of Greater London [11 August 2019]

Greater London did not exist until 1965. It is an official placename, not just a colloquial term as is used in North America since the beginning of the 20th century. Before 1889 the City of London was a large group of ecclesiastical parishes in the County of Middlesex. (Registers for each of these churches are available online.) In 1889 the County of London came into being and consisted of a great many places previously in Middlesex, Surrey and Kent.

If you are speaking of an event that took place before 1889, use "City of London, Middlesex, England";
between 1889 and 1965, use "City of London, London, England";
after 1965, use "Greater London, England";
if you don't know where in London the event occurred, use "London, England".
